AT THE FOREFRONT OF RESEARCH IN OPTICS AND PHOTONICS

The Center for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL) is a strategic cluster of optics/photonics researchers from Université Laval, École Polytechnique de Montréal, McGill, INRS, École de technologie supérieure, Université de Sherbrooke, Université du Québec à Montréal and Concordia University who share the following objectives:

- to train graduate students and post-docs who will form the next generation of optics/photonics scientists
- to perform fundamental and applied research
- to contribute to socio-economic development by supporting industry.

Its research excellence, state-of-the-art facilities and comprehensive scientific program have positioned the COPL among the best centers in the world for optics and photonics training and research.

The Center was founded in 1989 at Université Laval and has since expanded beyond the institution in order to encompass leading-edge expertise available at other universities therefore creating a critical mass of researchers capable of taking on the complex and challenging task of furthering the development of photonics knowledge and applications.

Research activities at the COPL are grouped into five themes:

Lasers and ultrafast phenomena
Guided-wave optics and fiber-optics
Optical communications
Biophotonics
- Photonic materials

The COPL is a key stakeholder in economic development in Quebec. In the Greater Quebec City area alone, it provides highly skilled manpower to:

- the National Optics Institute (INO)
- the Optronics Systems Group of Defence Research and Development Canada- Valcartier
- some forty optics/photonics businesses (most of which were founded by its graduates and researchers).

Furthermore, COPL graduates can be found in numerous companies and research laboratories in Canada and abroad where they provide a valued contribution.

The COPL is headquartered in Quebec City in a 10,000 m2 building opened in 2006 and solely dedicated to research in optics and photonics . Lab space in a clean room environment takes up two thirds of the area. The Center is equiped with fiber-optic fabrication and characterization facilities, thin film deposition systems, femtosecond lasers and sophisticated optical test and measurement instruments.

The COPL looks ahead to continued leadership in optics and photonics research and training. As a strategic cluster of experts, already well recognized around the world, the COPL is uniquely qualified to coordinate research activities in optics and photonics in the province of Quebec thereby playing a key role in bolstering innovation and training the scientists of tomorrow.
