Last May 22nd, at the COPL Annual Meeting, Director Réal Vallée presented INO President & CEO Alain Chandonnet with the 2018 COPL Award of Recognition.

The award is given yearly to a former COPL student whose career has led to outstanding contributions to optics and photonics, either in business, research or academia. There is no doubt that Alain Chandonnet meets all of the requirements for this distinction. Supervised by Prof. Michel Piché, he obtained his PhD in laser optics and physics in 1991 from Université Laval.

He began his career in 1990 as a researcher at the National Optics Institute (now INO) and later headed one of the institute’s sectors of activity. In 1999, he joined the managerial staff at EXFO. One year later, with 4 colleagues, he cofounded TeraXion and became its President & CEO. In 2009, he was appointed entrepreneur-in-residence at INO and later launched handyem, a biophotonics company, in 2011. In 2016, he was involved in the establishment of Optel Medevon, a subsidiary of Optel, specializing in the medical sector.

In October 2017, he returned to INO as President & CEO and member of its Board of Directors.

The COPL is proud to have awarded him this prize and congratulates him for an exemplary career
